We've known for a long time that Hollywood is full of predatory characters. Many women have come forward to detail their experiences with sexual assault and being coerced into certain behavior with the promise of getting a leg up in the industry. Even worse, there are many stars who have come forward in their adult years to share how they were preyed upon as minors. Demi Lovato says she was raped by someone who worked at Disney. Millie Bobby Brown had Reddit forums that were dedicated to sexualizing her when she was still just a child on Stranger Things. Anne Hathaway revealed that she was also caught in some uncomfortable moments when she was in a minor.
Anne Hathaway has been promoting her new movie called Eileen. It's a thriller set in 1960s Boston, and it's based on a novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh. The title character Eileen, played by Thomasin McKenzie, is working at a juvenile facility when a new counselor, played by Anne Hathaway, arrives and helps her access some new, exciting parts of herself. But their relationship grows darker and parasitic. The trailer for Eileen hasn't even been released yet, but Anne, along with other cast members, took some questions about the film at the Sundance festival in January.
In a clip shared on Instagram, Anne opened up about one of the most memorable things that she was asked when she first entered the world of acting. "One of the very first questions I ever got asked when I started acting and had to do press was, 'Are you a good girl or a bad girl?'" she said on stage. "I was 16. And my 16-year-old self wanted to respond with this film."
The crowd murmured when she shared the question that the press asked her and clapped in enthusiasm and support. Someone wrote in the comment section, "As someone who was an actress and a part of that world twenty years ago, I was SA’d too many times to count. I RAN away from Hollywood. I quit modeling and acting. Turned down a movie role. I had to get away. Women are not protected. We are fed to the wolves in that industry."
In 2018, Anne also said she had some negative, "unacceptable" sexual experiences on set during her time in Hollywood.
“I think that there’s got to be some guys who get high off the power," she told Glamour. "But in a lot of cases, it’s an echo chamber. Most guys have never seen anything different.”
She has never named any names about who these people were and what exactly happened, but many other actresses have come forward with similar stories and claim that the industry is rife with sexual harassment and exploitation.
