Wherever they are in the world, every woman deserves dignity.
This International Women’s Day, IsraAID is honoring the hidden struggles of women everywhere – especially in crisis situations. Through sharing their stories, we are honoring their resilience and their right to dignity, safety, and security.
Women and girls make up almost 50% of the world’s population. IsraAID is making sure they receive respect and dignity 100% of the time. Here are just some of the ways how:
Türkiye In the wake of the deadly earthquakes in Türkiye, many women in temporary shelters are struggling to access basic hygiene products for themselves and the family members that they care for. IsraAID is currently focusing on delivering items like diapers, menstrual hygiene items, baby wipes, and adult diapers, allowing families to maintain their dignity amid crisis.
In the past month, we’ve distributed over 28,000 kilograms of essential aid, as well as tents for thousands of people. This emergency response is ongoing and we are continuing to provide urgently needed items, including 5000 solar lights, and enough underwear, blankets, and sleeping bags for over 1,000 people this week. Your support is crucial to supporting displaced families in Türkiye.
Kenya Clementine and Anjelina, two women from Turkana County, walk every day to dig in a dry river bed just to access water for their families. Women in Kenya are facing the worst drought in 40+ years, forcing them to travel further and further from home to find water for their families, and exposing them to a higher risk of violence along the way. That’s why IsraAID is working to bring clean water into the heart of drought-affected communities.
“I go down every morning and get one jerry can of water. I use it up and go down again in the evening to get another. I don’t have any way to store it.” – Anjelina, who lives with her family of five in Turkana County, Kenya
Vanuatu During climate-related disasters, like typhoons and volcanic eruptions, added stress and lack of resources can expose women to higher levels of gender-based violence. In Vanuatu, one of the world’s most disaster-vulnerable countries, IsraAID is working to provide women with the resources to make it through disasters and emergencies with dignity.
“For vulnerable communities, disasters caused by climate change can be even more dangerous. These are times when many women, girls, and people with disabilities face a higher risk of gender-based violence and post-traumatic stress, or even loss of life.” – Rosina Lapi, IsraAID Vanuatu Protection Manager
Moldova In Moldova, IsraAID is working to provide psychological support, self-care workshops, and burnout prevention to Ukrainian refugees. From the start of the war, IsraAID has worked to provide mothers and women with the tools to rebuild their lives away from their homes and families.
With her mother and younger sister, Arina fled Odesa for Chișinău, first meeting IsraAID in a hospital where they were sheltering:
“I am very grateful to IsraAID – you were a source of happiness for us. I tear up just thinking back. IsraAID’s social worker took care of us.”
Colombia For the nearly 1.6 million Venezuelan migrants in Colombia, building a better life can be derailed by a lack of resources or discrimination. For women, this problem is compounded. IsraAID’s livelihood programs help women gain the tools and resources to find work or start their own businesses, giving them financial independence and a better future for themselves and their children.
